A new study shows that a typical electric fence that measures more than 30 feet tall can last at least 60 years and up to 100 years.
The study, published Monday in the journal Science Advances, also shows that it takes less than three years to build an electric fence for a single family home.
Electric fence parts are currently available from various companies, but the cost of building them is prohibitive.
“If you want to build your own electric fence, you need to have a lot of money to get it up and running,” said David Kostar, the lead author of the study.
Kostor and his co-authors at MIT’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, have designed a new electric fence with a range of 20 miles per charge, including an 80-mile maximum range.
“It’s about 20 times faster than the current fence technology,” Kostars said.
“This is a big step forward in terms of the durability of the fence.
This is a breakthrough in technology that has not been done before.”
The researchers’ research was conducted using a 3D-printed electric fence prototype, which was used to demonstrate the feasibility of using an electric circuit to drive a new fence.
The new design has a high-voltage circuit in the fence that can produce a current of 100 amps, but only if the fence is insulated.
The barrier was built using materials made of magnesium, aluminum, aluminum oxide, and titanium.
The researchers found that the barrier’s internal resistance can be increased to nearly 300 pounds per square inch, which is the equivalent of about 20-year life.
The research was funded by the National Science Foundation.
The paper, “Electric fences and fence-building: a novel method for extending the life of a 3-D printed electric fence,” was published in Science Advives.
